Weather is warming up, kayaks are hitting the water. If you're like us and ever wondered where you can drop in on the Arkansas River. Wonder no more. As the Arkansas has several hidden river access points. One of our favorite launch spots is just South of Wichita on the outskirts of Derby. Head South on Interstate 135, exit K15 toward Derby. At 63rd, (Patriot Ave.) turn west and head over the river, then south at Grove. Follow Grove back toward the river and look for the Canoe launch site. Enjoy the water and stay safe.

I just finished a kayak trip yesterday starting from south of the Lincoln Dam and finishing at the Derby / Grove "Canoe" launch. While it it a great place to meet up with your receiving pickup party, it has no launch deck. Instead you have to pull your kayak around the base wall and up a steep hill. It will do though.

Arkansas river is usually flocked by kayak lovers during this season. Well, who wouldn't love to experience it, isn't it? Only if I know how to kayak, I will surely be there and make sure that I will get the chance to learn the said activity! Some of my friends were saying that it is not really complicated once you have learned how to paddle and balance. At the same time, you need to have a keen ear so that the coordination with your teammate will be smooth!

I have kayaked from this canoe launch down to the K55 access point and how relaxing! Best time to go is when the river is a little higher than normal. There are a few rocky places and of course the sandbars.

Anyone doing a float on Sunday, May 24, 2020? I'm experienced, but have never done this section of the Arkansas River.
